Since the start of the www age the links (link building) have been playing role in website popularity. Initially there was no spam link building. Webmaster in a need use to put the other famous and useful website links on their website. The Search Engines started to count the inbound links for a certain website and giving positive page rank or a high index to that particular website.
The SEO companies started to take advantage of the situation and started link building to get a better indexing . The search engines did not get the notice of the situation and the mal practice of spam link building got the most effective tool for SEO.
The situation started affecting the search results and website with poor contents or unrelated contents started appearing on first page of search results. This could hamper the reputation of the search engines. Now the search engines have to take some serious steps. They have to distinguish between the spam inbound links and the original inbound links.

Links are just like public transports and carries traffic from different public station, bus stops, metro stations, subway stations to the point of destination like market place, cinema, hospital, school, colleges etc. The links are only successful when they carry the passenger to the right destination.
Suppose a bus carries a student to the hospital and a patient to the college, it will be a disaster. Nobody will use that transport again. Same happened with a wrongly placed link. What will happen to the link ( URL ) of a football website on a wedding dress website.
Properly placed links on busy website works as big airplanes carrying lot of passengers to their destination and link placed on website with low traffic acts like donkey carts.
The Google analyze the links with related content on both the website. The Real estate website link placed on the other real estate website will be give proper values and can give the related website better indexing.

Google and other search engines calculate and give importance to the web pages having more inbound links without nofollow tags.
Nofollow is a little HTML tag that ruins all the effort done by a link building company or a person and it restricts the search engine from increasing the page rank of the webpage.
Page having lot of inbound links from other websites is regarded as a famous page in the algorithm of the search engines and is given a higher index and in Google terms a higher page rank. However it is not that simple and due to spammers and link builders every search engine tried to neglect artificial or spam links.
